A stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is interrupted or there is bleeding in the brain. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. It is urgent to get emergency care at the first sign of a stroke. Early treatment saves many lives and reduces the effects of stroke.
Most strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked and blood flow stops. This type of stroke is called an ischemic (iss-KEYmik) stroke. The blockage may be caused by a blood clot, and severe brain swelling may result. Life-saving surgery may be necessary to remove the clot and the brain tissue that has died from lack of oxygen.
Stroke Surgical Treatment
A stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is interrupted or there is bleeding in the brain. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. it is urgent to get emergency care at the first sign of a stroke. Early treatment saves many lives and reduces the effects of stroke.
The warning signs of stroke are:
- Numbness, weakness, or paralysis of the face, arm, or leg (on one or both sides of the body)
- Vision that suddenly blurs or decreases (in one or both eyes)
- Trouble speaking or understanding
- Dizziness, loss of balance, or a fall that is unexplained
- Difficulty swallowing
- Sudden, severe, unexplained headache
- Sudden confusion
Stroke Paralysis Treatments
A passive movement occurs when someone helps move your paralyzed muscles. This is different from active movement where you move independently.
Passive rehab exercise helps treat stroke paralysis by initiating the rewiring process in the brain. In most cases, survivors with paralysis will start with passive movement exercise and then move on to active exercise once the brain has recovered enough.
Putting it into practice:
If you have the help of another person, have them assist you during your exercises to help you complete the movements that you can’t make by yourself. It’s important to still attempt to make the movement yourself, even if you don’t feel like you can.
If you don’t have the help of another person, use your unaffected muscles to help move your affected muscles. This works best with smaller muscle groups like fine motor skills.
With enough time, patience, and practice, you can eventually regain enough movement to perform the exercises without assistance.
Stroke Treatment
If you are having a stroke it is important to get immediate medical attention—Call 9-1-1. The sooner you get treatment the better. Immediate treatment may help minimize the long-term effects of stroke and improve recovery outcomes.
Can Stroke Be Treated?
There are several treatment options for stroke depending on the cause of your stroke. If you are having an ischemic stroke or a stroke that is caused by a blood clot your healthcare professional may recommend drug treatment.
Drug Treatment
There is only one Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved drug treatment for acute ischemic stroke. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is given via intravenous therapy (IV) and works by dissolving the clot and improving blood flow to the part of the brain being deprived of blood flow. tPA should be given within three hours (and up to 4.5 hours in certain eligible patients)of the time symptoms first started.
